Bike Happening Numbah Two — okay so it happened yesterday

This is what I wrote to my mailing list:

last night was the second bike happening. a circumstantial gathering of friendly people on bikes at a specific time at a specific place that ride a specific route with a specific destination.

:P

i was told last night that it was not "organized," just a happy coincidence.

so last night we coincidentally met up again.

what a blast!

here's the deal:

wanna go for a fun ride (i.e. "do not muss your hair") on a thursday night? after farmers market we meet behind the frog and peach, a downtown wateringhole who's deck opens up to the san luis creek walkway.

last week 67 people showed up.

last night it topped a hundred.

cruisers. beaters. ten speeds. mountain bikes. i even saw a trick bike (don't know what they are called). and a couple of tandems (one of which was recumbant). and of course the obligatory bob trailers (made in slo; their creator was on the ride).

after given instructions (be curteous. have fun!) we move out to the mission plaza and at the green light began the cruise. we made three laps last night of downtown to cheers from those on the sidewalks, people taking pictures, waves, hoots, and hollers. we hollered back. ;) last week was the constant chirp of bike bells. last night it was the fuh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh of cards against the spokes.

final destination? my house! ;) we had two pony kegs and mellow music and a little mini bonfire going outside. people milled around the pond, met new friends, and lit fireworks, which is probably what summoned the police. but not til everyone had had enough fun. ;)

we used to have these things called "bob nationals" a ragtag parade of sorts that happened in between races when slo hosted a national criterium. for a good giggle check out the pics. summa my housemates are in those pics. ;)
